Flipflopi honoured as Innovator of the Year
Flipflopi was honoured at the 2024 Animal Action Awards at the BAFTA in London last month for our work in bringing international awareness on plastic pollution.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is a global non-profit helping animals and people thrive together, and in October they hosted the prestigious annual Animal Action Awards at the BAFTA, London, that puts a spotlight on unsung heroes and recognises innovators from around the world.

According to Azzedine T. Downes, President and CEO, IFAW: “Every year incredible and inspirational stories emerge of those whose unwavering commitment to conservation fulfils a deep sense of stewardship and ensures an enduring positive impact for animals, people and the place we call home.”
We were awarded this special honours award alongside 8 other humbling individuals and organisations who have made extraordinary contributions to conservation, rescue, and animal welfare which was hosted by UK celebrity and wildlife photographer, ornithologist, and conservationist Hamza Yassin.
The nine winners were chosen from over 650 nominations across 29 countries and the winners from the UK, Nigeria, India, South Africa, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Since 1969, IFAW has provided hands-on assistance to and protection of animals in need, and global leadership on pressing issues impacting their health, well-being and survival. Consisting of experts and everyday people, IFAW works across seas, oceans in more than 40 countries around the world: “The problems we’re up against are urgent and complicated. To solve them, we match fresh thinking with bold action. We partner with local communities, governments, non-governmental organisations and businesses. Together, we pioneer new and innovative ways to help all species flourish.”
We were privileged to receive the members of the IFAW team in Lamu recently including CEO Azzedine Downes, Executive Vice President Jason Bell and Africa Director, Jame Isiche accompanied by our Advisory Board member, Prof. Judi Wakhungu who took time to understand the work we do and the wider issues affecting the Lamu ecosystem. Our Lamu County Governor Issa Timamy also took time to recieve our visitors and share his insights.
