Reflecting on a busy year to plan for a plastic-free future

2021 was not an easy ride – from planning expeditions on the ‘world’s most dangerous lake’ during a pandemic, to the devastating fire that burned down our Lamu workshop, it was a year of huge challenges, yet huge triumphs too.

In our annual report, we’re sharing some of our activity highlights, while looking forward to 2022 to strategise how our recycled-plastic multicoloured dhow can positively influence behaviour, legislation and consumption of single-use plastics.

For Flipflopi, 2021 fuelled a turning point for our operations. We turned our attention from sea to land with the creation of waste management and social enterprise centres in East Africa, gaining new knowledge, infrastructures, talent and social enterprise partners along the way.

Despite ongoing tight restrictions, we focussed on accelerating and scaling up our efforts on water and on land in 2021 conscious of the world’s ever-growing consumption and production of single-use plastic. And, where in many countries, particularly low and middle-income countries where there is also little awareness of their negative environmental and health impacts.

The success of our Lake Victoria Expedition and subsequent partnerships led us to a transformation of our operational strategy. We scaled up to a full-systems approach to tackling plastic pollution working within our pillars of innovation, education and influence.

As we look to 2022, we’re creating the world’s first recycled plastic heritage boat-building training centre to reduce the reliance on timber and fibreglass for boat-building. The centre will provide a location to responsibly clear plastic from our environment and create new opportunities and industries within Lamu.

And that is just one of our aims, as has come to be expected from Fliplfopi, we have lofty ambitions for 2022 allowing us to get one step closer to a world without plastic. Read the report now to learn what those are.
