East Africa Cleaned Up!
This past Saturday, the 18th of September the world celebrated World Clean-Up Day and we were no exception. Our partners across East Africa took part and led so many activities. Here’s just a little snapshot of what we got up to…
The Green Revolution Swept into Uganda
Our friend, fellow revolutionary, environmentalist and all-round creative talent Sandra Suubi released her newest song Kiragala meaning green in Luganda. The video features the Flipflopi and was filmed during the Lake Victoria expedition in Kampala.
Take a look for yourself here:
The song celebrates the East African response in the fight against plastic pollution while encouraging everyone to play their part to protect our only home.
Kenya Cleaned Up
From Kisumu to Lamu via Nairobi and Diani our teams kept themselves busy…
In Kisumu, led by Dunga Hill Camp, over 200 people volunteered their time and over 8 tons of waste was collected. Check this out for a before and after shot…
In Diani, the team took part in a beach clean up and then invited 10 women to take part in a creative skills workshop using recycled Flipflops. The skills these women learnt today will be put to good use as we cover the Flipflopi Kubwa in the future…
In Lamu over 150 took part in cleanups on the Lamu Seafront and in and around the mangroves near Manda Airport. Approximately 450kgs of plastic was delivered to the Takataka Heroes site for recycling!
In Nairobi, we continued our partnership with the University of Portsmouth STEPP and Amusha Youth Initiative cleaning drainage gutters that were completely blocked with rubbish and initiating training to the team who will be leading households on how to segregate their waste to offer waste collections free of charge if waste is segregated at its source. This is part of a larger plan for the Youth Group to establish a sustainable waste management project.
From East to West, TZ turned UP!
On the shores of Lake Victoria in Mwanza, our partners Emedo partnered with Nipe Fagio and mobilised 100 people from university students to bodaboda drivers to clean up in the Sweya and Silvini streets.
While on the East Coast, in Jambiani, Flipflopi’s Maliha Sumar joined a group of volunteers to restore the white sand beaches to their glory!
