Taking a sustainable approach to business

The Flipflopi Project is proud to partner with Slaughter and May, an international law firm based in London, as part of their Responsible Business strategy

The Flipflopi Project is very thankful for the ongoing support of Slaughter and May, one of our core partners, and we are delighted to feature in their recent Responsible Business Video.  We asked Steven Galbraith, a Partner at the firm, some questions about their involvement with the project to date.

What led Slaughter and May to support The Flipflopi Project?

Our support for The FlipFlopi Project stems from our pro bono programme but also supports our wider responsible business strategy, which looks at using our skills, people and spheres of influence for positive social impact.  We provide a pro bono team of lawyers to support The Flipflopi Project, over a variety of qualification levels and areas of expertise.  Our volunteers have been excited to get involved and the subject area of environmental conservation is a particular focus and draw for people.

What has been the highlight of your work so far?

A highlight has been seeing the successful completion of The FlipFlopi Project’s first expedition along the East Coast of Africa and how much engagement there was on the way, and seeing the work going straight into the next project around Lake Victoria in 2020.

Which positive social and environmental changes do you hope will result from your partnership with The Flipflopi Project?

We hope that The FlipFlopi Project will inspire a lasting change away from plastic pollution and to innovative ideas for re-use, reduction of waste and a more circular economy.

How has The Flipflopi Project inspired you to integrate sustainability into your strategic and operational decisions?

As a business, we have already been working on ways to improve our environmental impact by working towards Science Based Targets and to imbed sustainability into our operational decisions.  We are signatories to RE100, a collaborative, global initiative led by The Climate Group, in partnership with CDP, and have committed to sourcing 100% of our future global electricity requirements from renewables.

Working with The Flipflopi Project has helped to highlight the global nature of the problem and inspire people as to how we can all do something to make a difference.

What opportunities exist for legal firms to contribute to the conservation sector?

Law firms are uniquely placed to use our legal skills to support the operational needs of these projects, adding valuable expertise and freeing up costs for the charity to use for the end-delivery of its objects, ultimately, enabling The FlipFlopi Project and similar projects to achieve higher impact in the conservation sector.
